A couple of years ago, Will Pleasant-Ryan wrote Docker for Mac: Overcoming Slow Mounted Volumes, describing his desire to use Docker for local development. Running the script brought performance back to approximately the same as. After a bit of searching, I found this script on a GitHub issue. I noticed this when our Rails database migrations took around 10 times longer to run on Docker for Mac versus native. Another disk IO problem you might run into using Docker for Mac is slow database speed. I've tried to mount an ext4 partition in wsl1 but it's impossible but I've read that with release of WSL2 it could be achieved. I often work on Windows and Linux (on dual boot) and I'm using a ntfs partition to synchronize a data between systems which is something problematic (lots of docker containers have a problem to work with ntfs permissions). Follow the steps outlined on Docker's website. Use this method if you aren't using external USB drives and/or don't want to install a fat VM like VirtualBox. Create and work on an ext4 filesystem image inside of macOS using Docker for Mac. ![]()
